Unconscious Bias in the Workplace Seminar

12th September 2016 at 10:15 AM until 12th September 2016 at 1:00 PM

Location:

Magherafelt Offices,
Mid Ulster District Council,
50 Ballyronan Road,
MAGHERAFELT,
BT45 6EN

As organisations struggle to recruit, retain or promote diverse talent and to create inclusive working environments that reflect new social attitudes to diversity and difference the concept of ‘unconscious bias’ has, in recent years, emerged as a possible explanation to existing patterns of exclusion. Drawing on cutting edge research from the fields of neuroscience, social psychology and human resource management this inter-active workshop will provide you with an overview of the concept of unconscious bias and its application to organisational decision-making and behaviour.

Specifically the seminar will cover:

1.   The science of Fast & Slow Thinking: Drawing on new scientific evidence you will hear about the ‘dual-process’ model of the workings of the human brain.

2.   What is Unconscious bias? The seminar will provide an overview of the science behind unconscious bias, covering the neurology of bias and key concepts such as Affinity Bias and Confirmation Bias. We will stress the impact on organisational attitudes, behaviours and decisions and highlight bias ‘hotspots’ in areas such as recruitment, work allocation, and other talent management processes.

3.   Effective tools and techniques for identifying and reducing unconscious bias: The workshop will highlight practical tools for reducing unconscious bias and for promoting inclusive behaviours.

This seminar hosted by Mid Ulster District Council, will be facilitated by Dan Robertson, regarded as a subject matter expert in the areas of diversity, inclusion management and unconscious bias.

The event will be held from 10.15 am to 1.00 pm.  There is no charge to attend the session.  A light lunch will be provided.
