Health and Wellbeing

A Regional Health and Wellbeing Group consisting of representatives from the 11 Councils and the NIHE was formed in 2020 to share best practice and to work in partnership to improve employee wellbeing, upskill line managers, raise awareness, challenge mental health stigma and contribute to cultures that support attendance.

In focussing on these activities, continuing to work with our stakeholders and responding to their needs, the Group aims to support and assist individuals in Councils and the NIHE to improve their mental health and wellbeing, and to support Councils and the NIHE to implement their own health and wellbeing initiatives.

This work is done in partnership with Councils and the NIHE and other key stakeholders and established campaigns e.g. ‘Take 5 Steps to Well-Being’, the ECNI Mental Health Charter, INSPIRE Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub.

Wellbeing Hub

10 out of the 11 Councils and the NIHE offer a Wellbeing Hub to employees that provides information, advice, and support on a variety of topics related to mental and physical health, improving engagement and wellbeing.

Health and Wellbeing Funding

As part of the 2024/2025 Health and Wellbeing Programme, Councils and the NIHE were offered funding to support a Health and Wellbeing event.

The following Councils have utilised this funding:

To mark World Menopause Day a workshop called 'My Body and Menopause' was held to help employees understand how to apply nutrition, lifestyle and supplements to optimise hormones and navigate this transitional time with greater ease and a natural, holistic approach.

Belfast City Council

For Parent Mental Health Day, Belfast City Council organised a webinar on Parents' Emotional Health, delivered by the organisation Parenting Focus.

Derry City and Strabane District Council

Funding was used to provide training for Council Leisure employees on Substance Misuse Issues within their community.
